Red pandas are solitary creatures, usually travelling around in pairs, on their own or with a family. They only seek out other red pandas during mating season. Red pandas do not usually take permanent mates and take a new one every mating season, which usually lasts from around early January to mid-March.
Red pandas can reproduce at 18 months, for both females and males. When they reach 2-3 years, they become fully sexually mature. Males will fight for breeding rights with females in the area; standing on their hindlegs and lashing with front paws is common. Females and males will mate with more than one male during the season.
The gestation period usually ranges from 90-150 days. A mother red panda will collect sticks, grass and leaves to make a nest; these nests are usually placed in hollow trees or crevices.
The mother usually births pairs, though the number of cubs can vary from 1 cub to 5 in rare cases. The cubs themselves are born blind and deaf, but with fur. Their mother cleans them, helping them to recognise the scent of each other. During the first week, the mother spends 60% to 90% of her time watching over the cubs. After the first week, the mother begins to leave the nest. Within 18 days the cubs begin to open their eyes, but don't fully see until 30-40 days afterwards. At around 90 days, the cubs reach full adult fur and colouring, as well as leaving the nest for the first time with their mother. They begin to eat solid foods around this point as well. After 6-8 months, they wean from their mothers. However, they remain with the mother until the next litter is born. After that, they make their own way into the world.
